Shaggy Travails

topic posted Mon, December 8, 2003 - 3:50 PM by  Unsubscribed
Okay, so I'm doing it. I'm growing my hair out for the winter, going all shaggy-styley because Chicago is a cold assed city and I won't wear hats in public.

Still, I've made this attempt in the past and whenever I go in for a "clean up", the hairstylist seems to hear "shave it all off" and I hear the damning *SKRRRRITCH* of the scissors across my bangs before I can say anything to stop them.

So, like, I don't know what to say. I feel like I'm a pretty articulate guy. I think I'm fairly specific when I say "just clean it up a little, I'm letting it grow out". That doesn't mean I want a really short haircut with a minimum of clipper action. No. It means I want bangs I can chew. It means I want a party in the back AND a party in the front. I've been to my foofie-shma-shma hairstylist and the el cheapo hairstylist I keep on the side, and they both look at my head like a lawn that is to be mowed down to the soil. Maybe it's their way of saying I'm a short hair person and not a long hair person. I don't know. I don't get it.

just scream like a little girl as soon as they take the clippers out. i mean, you're not going to require any clipper action if you're growing it out right? you could always go to a new upscale person and just lay it all out there all neurotic like. i've done that before when i've been too scared to act like a freak around my normal stylist.

I trust no one. I wish it were common practice to have a consultation visit with a new hairstylist. There needs to be a little bit more consideration in the hairstyling world, instead of so much gonzo weedwhacking.

Good luck to you. I totally am still aching to be a 19 year old Mick Jagger, even though he and I were roughly that age together, and my hair still would never grow out right.

I would be happy if I could grow it out to look like a glory-days Walt Whitman, though that does call to compare present day Mick, which....oh, eww.

I'm starting to wonder if my facial features have grown haggard enough yet to support a shaved head, so I can just stop worrying about hairstyles altogether. Last time I tried that, though, I bore a disturbing resemblance to a Peanuts character.

I think you're right. Shaved heads are becoming kind of semi-mullet-ish right now.

I think the shaved head only works if the guy is almost bald. Then, I say go for it. Especially if it keeps him from even approaching a combover.

Yeah, but then why do I always hear people always say "do you think that guy has a shaved head because he wants to or because he has to?"

So nobody WANTS a shaved head? It's like a tracheotomy scar for people with male pattern baldness? Even the sexy shaved headed people?

                    My empire is crumbling.

Do you REALLY want to look like Michael Stipe or Billy Corgan or Seal or Mike Tyson or Andre Agassi??

                      Do you??

Who ARE these "sexy shaved headed people" you speak of? I can't think of any!!

Even good-lookin david Beckham looked like shite when he went "all the way".

The late Persis Khambatta was sexy. Wait, she wasn't a man.
I may be odd in admitting this, but certain men can carry off a bald held quite well--even by choice.

I'm pretty sure that was supposed to be "bald head".

The shaved head thing has gone the way of frat boys from Jersey. Besides, in order to pull this off, you must have a cranium that is free of indentations, scars, and other features that comprise a phrenologist's wet dreams.

i like it when balding men do a short trim of the hair as opposed to a shave although i suppose it's really and truly only cute on receeders. i hate that waxy cu-ball look a la michael jordan. i dont know that it works on anyone other than michael jordan.

Well, I'm more committed than ever to my original plan of hair-farming. I don't know what I was thinking. Thanks for the fashion intervention, kids.

Who should be our shaggy-haired role models at this point? I'm going to the stylist this week and need to know what to tell her.

Maybe I should just go back to the tintin cut of the last five years....it's much easier to deal with in the morning.
